His work as a numismatic historian became the most important work on not only Medieval Austria and Italy but the variety of medieval coins from Ercole (Hercules) Gnecchi's collection of over 3,000 coins. The Gnecchi family that had made its fortune in the silk trade that led Ercole to help his brother Francesco in the classification of the collection of 20,000 volumes now in the Museo Nazionale Romano. This personal collection lists many rare items not found in the original Museum collection. An essential reference item.

Tokens, both "patriotic" and merchants' "store card" issues, as they are called, form one of the most significant areas of Civil War-period holdings in the American Numismatic Society cabinet.
