About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus. [Uniform edn - the true 1st edn was published in 1930.] FINE/NFINE. No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,clean, crisp colour illustrated dw/dj (3 multi-colour,entwined fishes) with negligible shelf-wear and minimal creasing to edges - two tiny closed tears to head of spine/backstrip - no other tears/nicks present. Miniscule marking/grubbing bleed/transfer to rear wrap, due to proximity of other books against the dw/dj whilst shelved.Top edge minimally and lightly dust-soiled,fore-edge brighter and cleaner; contents bright, tight and pristine - a tiny dog-ear crease to top corner of rear blank the only fault.Publisher's original bright, crisp, clean, dark green cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt, author's facsimile signature to bottom edge of upper board and gilt lettering to spine/backstrip with immaculate unmarked, plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st thus,6-251pp includes half-title+title pages and 32 chapters.
Visually the exterior appearance is almost exceptional, but particularly internally, the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 40+ year-old age.It is only the exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall for the dw/dj.Despite them,it really is still an exceptional, exemplary example for its sharpness, cleanliness and brightness and lack of detracting faults.
The very first Miss Marple detective novel,'The Murder at the Vicarage'. This female detective's first appearance was in six short stories, written in 1927- 1928 and this is her first full-length novel appearance, written and published in 1930.
In the peaceful village of St Mary Mead nothing ever happens. So it seems almost incredible when Colonel Protheroe, the churchwarden,is discovered shot through the head in the Vicarage study.
Everybody thinks they know who has done it - including Miss Marple, the real old maid of the village, who knows everything and sees everything and hears everything.
She declares that at least seven people have reasons for wishing Colonel Protheroe out of the way. Excitement dies down when somebody confesses to having committed the crime. But that is not the end, for almost immediately somebody quite different also confesses. And there is a third confession through the telephone. But who really killed Colonel Protheroe?

Synopsis

E-book exclusive extras: Christie biographer Charles Osborne's essay on The Murder at the Vicarage; "The Marples": the complete guide to all the cases of crime literature's foremost female detective. The murder of Colonel Protheroe -- shot through the head -- is a shock to everyone in St Mary Mead, though hardly an unpleasant one. Now even the vicar, who had declared that killing the detested Protheroe would be 'doing the world at large a favour,' is a suspect -- the Colonel has been dispatched in the clergyman's study, no less. But the picturesque English village of St Mary Mead is overpopulated with suspects. There is of course the faithless Mrs Protheroe; and there is of course her young lover -- an artist, to boot.Perhaps more surprising than the revelation of the murderer is the detective who will crack the case: 'a white-haired old lady with a gentle, appealing manner.' Miss Jane Marple has arrived on the scene, and crime literature's private men's club of great detectives will never be the same.
