About This Item

London: John Murray, 1949. First edition. Very Good +. Berkshire has long been a battleground. The neolithic, bronze and early iron ages studded the downs from Streatley to Ashbury with camps, settlements and burial places. Wessex fought Mercia, Saxon fought Dane, the Normans built castles, King Stephen beseiged Matilda, Barons beseiged one another, Parliament fought the King, and all in Berkshire and for longer and harder than they fought their battles and fortified themselves in other parts of the South of England. Detailed information on each place is given in the Gazetteer of Parishes, and includes a map of Berkshire and extensive illustrations throughout. stated first edition.yellow cloth boards with some bumping amd rubbing.tight binding and clean pages.inner flyleaf foxed. many black and white photos.
