Germany.. No date. 1735- 1745.. Engraving, printed in color with additional handcolor, image size 19 x 13 inches on sheet 20 x 15 1/2 inches, folding as issued. Light creasing at lower centrefold, soft crease at left corner, light toning to paper with scattered light foxing mostly in the margins, overall very good condition. An oversize and strikingly handsome plate, number 737 from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann "Phytanthoza Iconographia," printed on thick laid paper. Dunthorne (#327) notes that plates from this work represent "some of the earliest examples of color printing from a single plate", many of them printed by a combination of line engraving and mezzotint. The initial S at lower right indicates the artist engraver Abraham Seutter (ca. 1690-1747). The central feature of this image is an illustration of the banana plant with leaves and flowering stem, with details of the fruit at the left edge. At the right edge are images of two unrelated plants. .
