About This Item
London: Sold by J. Debrett..., and Richardson and Urquhart..., 1783. 2 volumes in 1. 8vo, 175 x 110 mms., pp. [ii], viii, 263 [264 blank]; [ii], 278 [279 Errata, 280 blank, contemporary or slightly later plum sheepskin, gilt border on covers, gilt rules across spine, red leather label; B3 and B4 signed E3 and E4 in volume 1, slight wear to binding, but a very good copy, with the bookplates of Edward Cheney on the front paste-down end-paper and a note about the owner and the bookplate loosely inserted. The collection was first published in 1788, and The Monthly Review noticed it in one sentence: "A bouquet of flowers and weeds promiscuously gathered from the lower and middle regions of Parnassus." The Critical Review gives the reader just the facts: "This collection consists of odes, epigrams, and other little pieces of poetry, which have appeared in the newspapers or magazines, within the course of the last twenty years. The gentlemen, and ladies, to whom they are attributed, are, or have been, the principal wits, poets, and poetasters of the age."
