Bird, 1831-1904, was a British writer, explorer, naturalist, and photographer. She wrote many pieces of travel literature in the late 1800s, including Unbeaten Tracks in Japan, A LadyŐs Life in the Rocky Mountains, and Among the Tibetans. Her travel books were often written in the form of letters, chronicling her first-hand experiences with foreign countries and cultures.
