The author, Russian-born wife of American journalist Louis Fischer and herself a gifted translator and interpreter, writes about her personal experiences living in the Soviet Union during 1921 and 1927-39. As a personal memoir, it hardly mentions the disastrous famines first under Lenin and in the 1930s under Stalin.
