About This Item

New York: E.P. Dutton & Company, Inc, 1959. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo. [8], 9-178, [6] pp. Yellow cloth with brown decorations on the front board, brown lettering on the spine. Illustrated endpapers and pastedowns. With in-text and full-page drawings by George herself. Highly difficult to find in the first edition. George's tale of young Sam Gribley is witty yet thoughtful, as the young boy revels in his complete independence living in the Catskill Mountains without the complications of city-life or adult supervision. With the help of his pet falcon Frightful, Sam learns to live off the land while contemplating his conflicting needs of peace and quiet and human companionship. Winner of the 1960 Newbery Honor Award. Light foxing to the boards and a hint of yellowing to the gutters; jacket is price-clipped with traces of edge wear and rubbing.
