London: F C and J Rivington; W Otridge and Son; A Strahan et al, 1810 A complete early set of Ann Radcliffe's classic tale in contemporary full leather bindings, published as part of the British Novelists series. Classed as 'fair' because the bindings, although currently sound, have a lot of wear. The spines have the remains of gilt compartments with gilt decoration at the top and bottom and gilt titles which are now not readable - one vol has part of a volume number label. The boards are in nice clean condition with wear at edges and corners and some scuffing. Vol I has the greatest amount of wear to the spine. Each volume has a British Novelists title page, with an old signature to the top and the book title page. Contents: Vol I: 2 x title; text pp 1-321. Vol II: 2 x title; text pp 1-321. Vol III: 2 x title; text 1-333. All 3 volumes have clean contents with some light foxing, particularly at the beginning and end of the volume. Vol I has lost a corner tip at pp 145 and 201; Vol II has a repaired tear in the gutter to the series title; and Vol III has a small pale pink mark at p 10 and a mispagination with continuous text: 254-259-256.

(ii), 428p; (ii), 478p; (ii), 463p; (ii), 428p. Rebound without half titles in full calf with black morocco spine label gilt and with gilt volume numbers and minor gilt decoration. "Mrs. Radcliffe was the most popular of the early Gothic writers. The Mysteries of Udolpho was read by just about everybody who read novels at all in the last few years of the 18th century or the first half of the 19th, and its author's influence upon the Gothic tradition both at the time and since has been immense. When Jane Austen was looking for a typical Gothic novel to satirize in Northanger Abbey (1818), she found that The Mysteries of Udolpho was still the best known and most widely read of them all." (St. James Guide to Horror, Ghost & Gothic Writers, p. 469). Rothschild 1701; Lowndes IV, p. 2035; Summers. Gothic Bibliography, p. 135; Tinker 1703.

Description:
London: printed for G. G. and J. Robinson,, 1794. The archetypal gothic novel First edition of one of the founding texts of Gothic literature by the pioneer of the genre (1764-1823); from the collection of the distinguished British book collector Eric Quayle, with his book label to the front pastedown of the first volume. Through The Mysteries of Udolpho, Radcliffe is particularly responsible for popularizing the "haunted castle" Gothic trope, Udolpho being directly parodied in Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, and influencing many other, later books such as Wilkie Collins' Woman in White. Even into the 20th century, the atmosphere of Udolpho lingered to haunt books such as Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca. Quayle published large-format and well-illustrated guides to book collecting, based on his own collection, which still act as signposts for new collectors, and important references for the experienced. In his The Collector's Book of Detective Fiction (1972), Quayle notes the importance of Udolpho as a…
