About This Item

Old ink manuscript inscription at upper right hand corner of title page ("N.º 33"). 31 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION, only issue. This work is a detailed essay on the political theories regarding constitutional, representative government, issued shortly after the 24 August revolt in Porto which ended absolutism in Portugal and brought about the establishment of a Constitutional monarchy. The duties and limits on royal authority are spelled out. Chapter I is on the nature of a constitution; chapter II, on the duties and obligations of a sovereign. On p. 31 is the promise, "Todos os mezes se publicarão dois Números deste Jornal," but the two copies we have located consist only of this issue. *** Not located in Innocêncio or in Fonseca, Pseudónimos. Porbase locates a single copy, at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, calling for 31 pp. and no further issues. Not located in Jisc. KVK (51 databases searched) locates only the copy cited by Porbase, and a link to the digitized Oliveira Lima Library copy.
