About This Item

Den Haag [The Hague]: W. Meijer, 1903. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio. 20, 83pp., [14]ff. Original calf portfolio, stamped in blind, with decorative vignette "B.D.S. CAUTE". Spine cap chipped. Two (of four) silk ties present. A fine set of facsimiles, printed on Van Gelder paper, housed in a worn, but intact, portfolio. Each facsimile is enclosed in its own cover with special title stating the respective owners of the original letters.

First edition of these finely reproduced facsimiles of Spinoza's letters, with transcripts and translations into German and English. All copies are numbered, ours being no. 35. While there is no limitation noted, an inventory of the major databases suggests a print run of perhaps no more than one hundred:

I. Brief an Heinrich Oldenburg, Rynsberg, Juni 1662.
II. Brief an Simon de Vries, Rynsburg, Februar 1663.
II. Brief an Lodewijk Meyer, Voorburg, 3 August 1663.
IV. Brief an Willem van Blyenbergh, Voorburgh, 13 März 1665.
V. Brief an Willem Blyenbergh, Voorburgh, 3 Juni 1665.
VI. Brief an Johan Bouwmeester (?), Voorburg, Juni, 1665.
VII. Brief an Heinrich Oldenburg, Voorburg, 20 November 1665.
VIII. Brief an Jacob Ostens, Haag, Februar 1671 [with stamps at title sleeve].
IX. Brief an Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Haag, 9 November 1671.
X. Brief an Joh. Georg Graevius, Haag, 14 December 1673.
XI. Brief an G.H. Schuller, Haag, 18 November 1675.
XII. Nachbildung eines lithographierten Briefes an Lambert van Velthuysen, Haag 1675.
XIII. Titelblatt eines Exemplars des Tractatus theologico-politicus, mit handschriftlicher Widmung des Verfassers an Jacobus Statius Klefmann.

Provenance: Stamps appear at title sleeve of Letter VIII.: "Prov. Germ. Soc. Jesu Bibl. Script.".
