About This Item

Paperback. Picador. UK. 1984. 'The Name of the Rose' by Umberto Eco. This book is a first edition Paperback. First Picador paperback edition, full numberline. The Name of the Rose - a book by Umberto Eco is his debut novel. A lovely copy with bright covers and although the spine bears two fine creases, the spine has not been broken and the book appears unread. Please Note: The very last page bears some notes in pencil but someone has taken care not to 'break' the spine. Pages are otherwise unmarked and lightly age toned but very good overall. A medieval thriller set in a castle run by Benedictine monks where murder has become rife. A learned Franciscan is sent to solve the mystery. A film starring Sean Connery was made and released in 1986. Not exlib and packed and sent with care.

Synopsis

The Name of the Rose, a novel by Umberto Eco, is a historical whodunnit — a murder mystery set in an Italian monastery in the year 1327. It is an intellectual mystery combining semiotics in fiction, biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory. First published in Italian in 1980 under the title Il nome della rosa, it appeared in 1983 in an English translation by William Weaver.

Reviews

One of the best mystery novels of all time! It is set in the middle ages and as well as being a mystery it also dives into a lot of political, religious, and philosophical issues of the time. It offers amazing insights into everything that is happening there and a thrilling chase for a serial killer on who's killing anyone who gets their hands on one book, in a secluded benedictine abbey
