About This Item

London: Published for the English Dialect Society, 1881. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine. 9" by 5.5". None . A lovely first edition of this catalogue of English herbs by William Turner as edited by James Britten. A lovely copy of this catalogue of herbs compiled by William Turner (A.D. 1548). The first edition thus as edited by James Britten, with an introduction, index of English names, and an identification of the plants enumerated by Turner, making a rare and interesting little book more accessible to the general public. A fitting companion to the 'Dictionary of English Plant-Names'. An uncommon copy. In three parts: the first being an exact reprint of the work; the second being a list of the English names given by Turner, alphabetically arranged; and the third an index in which the Latin names of the plants are given in alphabetical order followed by the various English ones mentioned in the body of the work. In a charming half cloth binding over marbled boards.  From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (1902-1968). Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. Her passion for literature is displayed by her impressive library. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'.  In a lovely half cloth binding over marbled boards and new endpapers. Externally excellent with minor shelf wear and some fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting to the half title, otherwise the pages are bright and clean. Near Fine
