New York: Harpercolophon Books - Harper & Row. Very Good 1977. Softcover. Marfree, acidfree; not written-in, underlined, reprint/club or ex-library. Mail SAMEDAY! Atlantic Monthly (01/19/1977) ""This memoir both records and recreates the lives of his forebears, and fuses them with the childhood experiences that formed the author's conception of himself as an Indian--a status which his father's talent and his mother's family might well have enabled him to discard. All of which sounds more complicated than it is when put into Mr. Momaday's graceful, lucid prose. ""Harper's (02/19/1977) ""Scott Momaday's book suggests the possibility, even the hope, that through some new alliance of the best in the Indians' culture and the best of the white man's civilization, we may yet find a way to answer that lie [of greed-and-consumption culture] and repeal its apparent conquest. ""New York Times Book Review (03/06/1977) ""'The Names' is an Indian book, but not a book about wrongs done to Indians. It is a search and a celebration, a book of identities and sources. Momaday is the son of parents; 6.5 x 8.5; 170 pages .

The text is illustrated with photographs and the occasional illustration. Photographic card cover with white coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. "Momaday gives us a careful, beautifully thoughtful catalogue of the names  of both people and of places  that meant something to him when he was growing up. They help them to become reuse, and he repays them by a very lyrical, at times humorous, reminiscence of how it seemed to him at the time, when he lived with the names in the state of emotional innocence, not fully comprehending how densely textured traditions were, or how much they would contribute to the pattern of his life." Larry McMurtry, from the rear panel blurb. Creasing to the book corners with rubbing of the book edges and panel. Browning of the text…
