Vol. I has frontispiece portrait of Napoleon, engraved by T.A. Dean, from a medal in the possession of Mr. O'Meara; and engraved plate titled "The house in which the Emperor Napoleon expired after a confinement of nearly six years" by G.H. Jones. Vol. II has frontispiece portrait. of Napoleon drawn by Mr. Heffernan from a statue presented by the Emperor Napoleon to Mr O'Meara July 23 1818, etched by T. Woolnoth. Bound by Taffin in full red morocco with elaborate gilt decoration & gilt lettering; top edges gil; marbled endpaperst. Occasional foxing; rubbing and scraping along joints; front joint of Vol. I partially split but holding; scrape on Vol. II spine; a very good set. Barry Edward O'Meara (1786-1836) was an Irish surgeon who accompanied Napoleon to St. Helena and became his physician, having been surgeon on board the Bellerophon when the emperor surrendered himself at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He accompanied Napoleon to the island of St. Helena and served as his personal physician there until his death in 1821. In this book, O'Meara charged Sir Hudson Lowe, governor of St. Helena, with mistreating Napoleon and through its' publication he hoped to solicit sympathy for the exiled Emperor. This book was first published in 1822 and quickly ran through several editions.
