About This Item
London: Printed for Joseph Johnson,, 1809. 4to. pp. xii, 238, 89, [i] + engraved portrait frontispiece, view of the British and French positions before Corunna, and two folding maps: Plan of the Action near Coruna and a general map of Spain and Portugal with the march of the British columns (troop movements picked out with original hand-colour, some offsetting on facing text). Light toning, a couple of ink blots and the portrait of Sir John has been idly traced on the tissue guard. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, some wear, rebacked with original spine laid down. Juvenile ownership signature of Ernest Williams above the index. Edited from Sir John Moores papers by his younger brother James. Moore was a popular and humane commander; his death during the battle which covered the (successful) embarkation of the remnants of the British army from Spain deflected a certain amount of critiscm from the humiliations of the campaign, but at the time of publication (months after Corunna and roughly contemporary with Wellesleys first forays back into Spain via Portugal) these events were raw and controversial.
