About This Item

London. Published by John Snow. 1842. 8vo., ix,[1],154p., engraved frontis portrait, numerous engraved text illustrations. Printed in double-columns, 1 folding map, creases expertly guarded, rebound in quarter brown paper over light green boards, a fine copy thus internally tight and clean (ho11.1). ~ vide O'Reilly and Reitman 7568 . This work, based on the author's stay of several years in the South Seas, was immensely popular, and was reprinted several times following the first edition of 1837. He not only gives the history of the islands, but discusses the Polynesian languages, customs, and religious beliefs.
