1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. 1874 second Canadian edition. Hardcover volume recently recased using original boards and spine, original blanks retained. Paginates: blanks, xii, 304, [26], 12 unpaginated plates, blanks. Complete as issued. Pagination differs from US editions for several reasons: there is a preface to the Canadian edition, 26 pages of ads, and text was reset using a fancier broader font, hence the increased number of pages. Text is the same. Overall condition is Very Good: Interior condition of text and plates is mostly spectacular with minimal foxing or evidence of use, binding is sound, old pencil initials of owner on dedication page, minor foxing to frontis. There is old water injury affecting mostly the ads in back (see image) but injury does not affect text or plates. Two leaves of ads are torn and missing about one quarter. Has stamp "U.N.B. Library" (University of New Brunswick?) on top and bottom edges but no other library markings. One of the most well known captivity narratives. 1886 hardcover by Fishkill Times, New York. Reprint of the 1828 first edition with an "Additional Appendix." I have compared this with the 1828 original and the text is the same while the plates are different. Condition is a mixed bag. At some point this volume was recased using original boards and it was expertly done. Boards show more than the usual stains. Interior is much better: has gift inscription dated 1929 and no other writing. Publisher was newspaper and the materials used are consistent with that. Paper is thin and now slightly brittle. Title page and table of contents both show small closed edge tears. Endpapers and plates are published on a delightful variety of colored papers: endpapers are salmon, plates are on yellow, pink and blue paper. Text is printed in columns like a newspaper article. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
