Hardcover. tall8vo, 24cm, first London edition, xx,508p., with 28 steel engraved plates including frontis, 2 large folding maps, in the original blind decorated pebbled cloth, gilt spine titles, spine slightly faded (titles clear), ink splashes on the rear cover, corners top spine edge chipped, scattered foxing, overall a very good sound copy (tgc). - Blackmer 1043. Lieutenant William Francis Lynch (1801-1865), describes a successful American government expedition made in 1848; the first to examine the shores of the Dead Sea and sound its depths. In 1852, Lynch authored an official U.S. Government report on the same expedition and during the Civil War served in the Confederate navy. Members of the Expedition are listed.
