Backhouse concluded a tour of Australia and sailed for the Indian Ocean in 1838. His lengthy work includes extensive descriptions of Mauritius, Mozambique Channel, and the Cape Colony, as well as many interior locations. "Backhouse and Walker were encouraged ... to visit the penal establishments and Aboriginal settlements and to make observations and suggest improvements. Their valuable reports were quite frank..." Hill 45. Ferguson 3558. Front inner hinge cracked, otherwise very nice UNOPENED copy of the first edition bound in original blindstamped cloth with gold spine lettering. Some internal foxing, bookplate removed from the front pastedown. The three maps - "The World," "Tasmania," and "New South Wales," are in excellent condition.

Spine with four raised bands, blind and gilt decoration, red morocco title label. Fading to spin. Ex-library book with small stamp to top page edge, title page and a few text pages. First Edition. Quaker missionaries James Backhouse and George Washington Walker spent six years in Australia investigating penal and Aboriginal establishments and natural history, 1832-38. They visited Van Diemen’s Land, Norfolk Island, Moreton Bay, Port Macquarie, Wellington Valley, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth, and were encouraged and given free access in their investigations by Lieut.-Governor Arthur and Governor Bourke. Their important reports (some printed here in the Appendix) were sent to these administrators as well to the London Friends and the Colonial Office, and were used by reformers of prisons and Aboriginal settlements.
