His lengthy work includes extensive descriptions of Mauritius, Mozambique Channel, and the Cape Colony, as well as many interior locations. "Backhouse and Walker were encouraged ... to visit the penal establishments and Aboriginal settlements and to make observations and suggest improvements. Their valuable reports were quite frank..." Hill 45. Ferguson 3558. A very good copy of the first edition bound in original blindstamped cloth with gold spine lettering. Some foxing to prelims, library stamp on front pastedown, no other markings. The three maps - "The World," "Tasmania," and "New South Wales," are in good condition.. 22.5 cm. xviii, 560, cxliv (appendices) pp. b/w plates, folding maps.

The boards are shelf rubbed, edge worn and marked, with the cloth frayed along the edges and in the corners. Despite this, the boards are strong and sturdy. Internally, there is a gift inscription in pencil to the front end page and age-related marking and tanning throughout. There are no other markings or inscriptions, and the pages are neat and complete. Securely bound and in decent condition for its age. JK.
