Amsterdam and New York: N. Israel and Da Capo Press, 1970. Hardcover. Fine. Facsimile of the 1840 first edition, issued as Volumes 46 and 47 in the Bibliotheca Australiana series. "Herman Melville described this as one of the best works on the whale fishery. Bennett was a scientist attached to this expedition. His specific assignment was to observe the anatomy and habits of southern whales, to determine the best way of conducting the sperm whale fishery, to investigate the islands of Polynesia, and to collect samples of natural history. In 1834 Bennett visited Pitcairn Island, and he gives an account of the islanders and details concerning the mutiny of the Bounty. Madeira, Tahiti, the Marquesas, and Hawaii were among the islands visited" (Hill 113). Octavo, two volumes: xv, 402 p. + vii, 395 p. with illustrations and a folding map. Original faux vellum bindings, with blue and gilt stamping. A fine set in the original acetate dust wrappers.
