'Narratives of Shipwrecks of the Royal Navy' is a collection of stories of different shipwrecks whose purpose is to depict "the discipline and heroism displayed by British Seamen under the most trying circumstances of danger." (preface). Gilly uses a wide array of narratives from the tale of the Drake which offered inspiration as a model of behavior for future generations to the tale of the Medusa which served as a warning to all sailors to take heed of the British naval code of discipline and honor.
This 1851 edition includes a complete list of all the shipwreck of the royal navy from 1793 to 1849 giving the name of the ship, the date it was lost, the commanding officer's name, the number of men on board, the number of men lost, and where the ship was lost.
