Original three-quarter calf over marbled boards, with gilt lettering ruling and tooling on spines; raised bands. Marbled edges. Marble endpapers. Frontispiece engraving and engraved second title page of volume one. The 300 steel engravings created from original drawings by eminent artists. Bindings with light wear, minor tears and light cracking of hinges. Boards rubbed. Cover of volume one attached only at top of binding. Starting at front inside gutters. Some light, sporadic foxing throughout, mostly in margins, sometimes affecting images.
