"NATIONAL PARKS PORTFOLIO" - complete set of 9 booklets with Introduction/Presentation/Contents sheet. Circa 1910's. The booklets are stored within a cloth wrapper; on the back-side of the wrapper is a 2-panel map of "National Parks and Principal Railroad Connections." Published by the Department of the Interior. Each booklet contains numerous photographs.
From the "Presentation" page:
"The main object of this portfolio is to present to the people of this country a panorama of our principal national parks set side by side for their study and comparison. Each park will be found highly individual. The whole will be a revelation. This is the first really representative presentation of American scenery of grandeur ever published, perhaps ever made. The selection, which, with the text and form, is by Robert Sterling Yard, is from photographs collected during a period of many months from all available sources, and represents the most striking work of many photographers. The portfolio is dedicated to the American people. It is my great hope that it will serve to turn the busy eyes of this Nation upon its national parks long enough to bring some realization of what these pleasure gardens ought to mean, of what so easily they may be made to mean, to this people."

The booklets are in very good condition - all are tightly bound with no loose pages and only a few random tears and small stains/ink smudges found. The bottom edge of the map and the bottom edge of the back cover of all booklets have a name written in pencil. Overall in very good condition.

Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
