The Natural History of the Amphibious Carnivora, including the Walrus and Seals, also of the Herbivorous Cetacea &c by Robert Hamilton; Sir William Jardine [editor] - 1st Edition - 1833 - from E C Books and Biblio.com

The Natural History of the Amphibious Carnivora, including the Walrus and Seals, also of the Herbivorous Cetacea &c

by Robert Hamilton; Sir William Jardine [editor]

Condition: Good/N

Edinburgh: W H Lizars, 1833 A good copy in the Publisher's original 'luxury' green leather binding of Vol VIII of the Naturalist's Library covering seals and walruses. With frontispiece portrait; vignette title page and 31 further plates, of which 28 are hand coloured. The Naturalist's Library was issued in parts to subscribers, but the Publishers also produced individual volumes - presumably for those who did not want to collect the whole series. This volume is a single volume production and has a different title to the vignette title page. The date is also unusual in that the 1st edition copies are dated 1839 (when this volume was issued) rather than 1833 which was the start of the Library. The blind tooled green leather binding has gilt titles to spine and all page edges are gilt. It has wear, particularly to edges and corners and there is a split beginning at the bottom of the spine joint with the front board. Contents with engraved frontispiece of Peron; vignette title page showing a boat beset by walruses; 1 further title page; advertisement for the series; contents pages; Memoir of Peron; introduction; text including numerous engravings and 31 plates, 28 of which are hand coloured (the 3 black and white plates are of sea monsters). The original yellow endpapers are present - a little age worn but generally clean. The contents are very bright and clean. A number of tissue guards are missing or loose and those present occasionally have offsetting from the plates. Some page tips have been turned over.
