Signed by Barry Goldwater to Limitation page. Illustrated with a map and various drawings en texte. Very rare 1st Issue of Goldwater's renowned exploration of the Colorado and Green rivers, compiled from his personal diary of the journey. Covers reinforced with take along edges. Remnant of sticker to front cover ( not obscuring title).Internally, very crisp and clean.

Ten (of 12) volumes: Haustellata volumes 1-4, Mandibulata 1-6, lacking volume 7 and supplement. First editions by Baldwin and Cradock, London. 1828-1835. Overall good condition. Complete with all plates and pages. Bindings are mixed. Seven volumes light tan full leather (goat?) with Yapp style bindings. Marbled endpapers and edges. Two half leather, marbled board bindings and one museum library rebind (~75 years old). The interiors are excellent except for vol. 6 Mandibulata which has water toning upper outer corner affecting last quarter of volume and final two plates. Haustellata volume 4 has museum library stamp on title page and plates are in a back pocket; has interesting old scientific marginalia. The value here is in the matching 7 volumes (Haustellata 1-3; Mandibulata 1-4). First appearance of Darwin's work in print. See Freeman pages 19-20. Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion.
A rare 1662 Elzevier printing of Bacon's "Historia Naturalis," or 'Natural History.' In this work, Francis Bacon sought to show the divisions of natural history, but more importantly to show how natural history overlaps with natural philosophy and they are not two distinct disciplines. This book helped lay the foundation for many philosophical methodologies that would be important through the 18th- and 19th-centuries.
