EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1834 A good copy of the 1st edition of Volume I of Gallinaceous Birds (covering varieties of domestic and wild fowl eg turkeys, pheasants), in the publisher's brown cloth binding. With half title; errata slip; black and white frontispiece portrait of Aristotle; hand coloured vignette title page with a picture of a cockerel (lacking tissue guard); 2 further title pages (with signature to top of second title); advert; contents listing; Memoir of Aristotle; and text with black and white illustrations and 30 hand coloured plates. 29 plates are listed in the contents index but there are 2 versions of plate 18. 32pp of advertisements and a 4 page geographical works advert at the rear. The cloth binding has been rebacked and the original spine relaid. There is some turning to corners and some fading to the spine and board edges. It is clean and sound. The original green endpapers are present with the Naturalist's Library watermark at the front and the remains of an old signature at the pastedown. There is a small paper repair at the top of p 115/6. Contents generally clean with light toning to paper. There is a persistent darker circular area which is across both text and plates which is noticeable from around p 185 to 214 and the verso of the following plate.
