About This Item
D. Bogue, 1847. Hardcover. Fine. A presumably satirical little work examining the word "Humbug". Fans of Dickens' Christmas Carol may find it amusing. From the Introduction: "But 'tis Humbug that sets this big globe a spinning. 'Tis Humbug that sends all its buzzing inhabitants forth, to smile, cry, laugh, flirt, strut, caper, dance, or crawl through their little lives" (10). "The Natural History of Humbugs in a tiny shilling volume--ahem! We feel very much as if we had undertaken to decant the Atlantic into a pint bottle. But courage! Even then the taster would have a notion of the savour of brine" (16). 5.5" x 3.5". Bound by Riviere & Son (1880). First edition. Full tan leather with ornate gilt decoration to borders and spine, T. E. G., gilt titles on green leather to spine, 5 raised bands, teal endpapers, original tan wrappers bound in at rear. Frontispiece, full-title, copyright, [v]-vii preface, [9]-126, 15 pages ads, original front wrapper, original rear wrapper. Condition: Little to no wear to leather binding, all gilt is bright and intact. Pages are clean and unmarked without foxing or wear.
