About This Item

Melbourne, Government Printers, 1879. 4to (27.3 x 18.4 cm). Printed title page, [iii] pp., one chromolithographed plate with accompagnying text leaves, one text figure. = McCoy published one of the most richly illustrated faunal descriptions of Australia; especially interesting because of the many thoroughly observed and carefully described mammals, reptiles, fishes, molluscs and insects. Many of these Australian animals are pictured and described for the first time. In total 20 decades were published, each with a mix of species from various phyla. This part, from decade IV, contains the preface, where it is stated that the Victorian sea-bear is different from the New Zealand name-sake, and this is followed by the animal's description, with a table of measurements of museum specimens, a detailed text figure of its skull, a drawing of the animal on land, and a nice chromolithographed plate of the adult animal. Nissen ZBI, 2828.
