About This Item
EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1838 A very good copy of the 1st edition of Part 1 of Birds of Great Britain and Ireland from the Naturalist's Library. In the original publisher's cloth binding with gilt titles to spine with 34 hand coloured plates as called for. Containing half title; list of volumes in the series; frontispiece portrait of Sir Robert Sibbald; black and white vignette title page (2 people hunting with birds); 2 further title pages; publisher's advert; contents listing; Memoir of Sir Robert Sibbald; text with black and white illustrations; and 34 hand coloured plates bound at the rear. The binding has been rebacked preserving the original spine and is sound and tight. There is fading to the spine and board edges and a couple of small marks to the front board. The top corners of the boards have light bumps. The original green endpapers are present with professional repair to the joints. The contents are very clean and the plates are well-coloured. The and plate paper has light toning. The tissue guards to the plates have occasional marks or spots and some offsetting. The tissue guard to plate 16 has a red paint mark at the edge. Plate 22 was originally badly bound making the image too close to the side edge, so that the top edge of a bird's head has been removed.
