Owner's name, date, address and ""yosemite - 43"" to top of ffep. A small rectangular stain to bottom of ffep where something was laid in place for a while, also tape stains(not scars) to top and bottom of endpapers - assuming where protected jacket rested. Bug hole to top inside of front hinge and rear hinge is beginning to split at top, but still solid. Interior and exterior very clean otherwise. Jacket is very nice with just a few small chip/nicks to spine ends, corners and top edge of flaps, and two 1/2 inch closed tears to top of rear panel and top of rear flap. Later edition/printing based on date of book advertised on rear flap and owner's date - 1925 at the earliest. Three period photos from previous owner laid in.

(2)p. manuscript letter measuring approx. 8" x 10 ½", folded, signed and dated January 14, 1867, Coast Survey Office, to Charles Lanman in regards to information pertaining to Prof. A.D. Bache. Mr. Hilgard was born in Germany. He settled with his parents in Illinois. Studied engineering in Philadelphia. He entered the Coast Survey in 1845. He was in charge of the Coast Survey under the Superintendent from 1862 until 1875. Throughout the American Civil War he served the Union Army and Navy by the construction of maps and charts and by surveys as well as by tidal and other information. During the failing health of Professor Bache, Hilgard, who was at that time in charge of the Coast Survey office, was obliged to perform the duties of Superintendent, which he did without extra compensation. He was Commissioner of the Committee of International Standards (seeking uniformity of weights and measures). The Scottish zoologist H.O. Forbes (1851-1932) travelled from the Keeling Islands through Indonesia between 1878-1883 visiting The Cocos Islands, West Java, South-Sumatra, Timor, Ambon, Larat (one of the Tanimbar Islands), and Buru. Forbes was active primarily in the Moluccas, Sumatra and New Guinea. His unusual tasks there also included tracking down the murderers of Captain J. C. Craig on Joannet Island in his temporary capacity as a government agent. In 1887 he was appointed meteorological observer at Port Moresby in New Guinea and used this opportunity to attempt further exploration of the island interior. The map he made from these explorations was deemed "unreliable" and he was not paid for his efforts. Disgruntled he decided to return to Britain.
