London: Bradbury & Evans, 1859 A fair copy of the first octavo edition, complete in 2 volumes. Classed as 'fair' because the half (morocco) leather bindings are unprepossessing and worn. The contents are in good to very good condition. This work was issued in part in folio form in 1855-6. This is the first full edition with 122 nature printed plates. Henry Bradbury pioneered the nature printing process with superb, if expensive, results. Vol I: Polypodium to Lastrea; half title; vignette title page; title page; preface; contents; text 254pp; with 51 tissue-guarded plates. Vol II: Athryium to Ophioglossum; half title; vignette title page; title page; contents; plate list; text with addenda, glossary and index 368pp; 71 tissue-guarded plates (numbering includes 8 bis plates). The contemporary morocco leather and buckram bindings have extensive wear to corners and joints and are scuffed. The front board to volume I is detached. The stitching however is sound and tight. The original marbled endpapers are present with the armorial bookplate of Francis Roper Larken to the reverse of the fep in both volumes. Top page edges are marbled to match the endpapers. The text pages are generally clean and bright. The plates have occasional spotting to page edges which can affect the side of the plate but not generally the image itself. There is some spotting and marking to tissue guards. Plate III in volume I has a small repaired tear to the top margin.

Description:
London : James Cundee, 1806 A good copy of this scarce 6 volume work bound in 3 volumes. With 58 (of 60) hand coloured plates and 6 hand coloured vignette title pages. An account of natural history based around observation and reading mixed with anecdotes and tales relating to the animal in question. The illustrator (anonymous) has then produced some extraordinary illustrations including an orang utan at the dining table, a flock of herons attacking rooks, a boxing kangaroo, and a man riding an ostrich, and a sneaking crocodile. Rev Smith refers to himself as an 'editor' rather than an author - but there are no clues as to contributors. Originally planned in 4 volumes, Vol 5 and 6 (covering fish, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates) were added in 1807. Each volume has a frontispiece, a hand coloured vignette title page, and a plain title page. According to the directions to the binder at the end of Vol 6, there should be 60 plates - this copy is lacking a frontispiece of a turkey and…

London, Edinburgh, and Dublin: A Fullarton and Co. , 1853 A good copy of the 7th corrected and enlarged edition in the original brown cloth binding, with 21 hand coloured plates. The binding has some chipping with loss to the top of the spine, and the cloth is splitting and fraying at the top half of the front hinge. It is otherwise clean and in good order with just light wear at corners and edges. Internally the original endpapers are present and the contents are complete. The plates are tissue-guarded and very clean. The text (and endpapers) have light spotting. The Glossary and Index have been bound slightly out of order, with some Glossary pages in the Index and vice versa - but they are complete.
