7 volume set. Tinted top edges. "Notice" and "Circular" and document from the Superintendent of Documents inlaid in vol I. Plates, portraits, maps. Set remains the single best source for documents, maps, illustrations, etc. of the quasi-war with France. The XYZ Affair, when French agents demanded a bribe for restoration of diplomatic relations, followed the American Revolution. France captured 316 merchant ships causing an economic crisis. In 1798 Congress rescinded previous treaties with France, beginning the quasi-war. After a succession of notable American victories, especially the USS Constellation's capture of a French ship, there was a cessation of hostilities and a peace accord in 1800. John Adams' hope for a second term was scotched. Additional shipping charges will be added based on destination and speed.
