About This Item
David & Charles. Very Good/Very Good. 1973. Hard Cover. 8vo 0715360078 Dust jacket in clear protective sleeve, small rubbed area. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. ix, 370 pages clean and tight. 4th Revised edition edition (April 1973). 384 pages clean and tight. Product Dimensions: 23.6 x 16.4 x 4.2 cm. This is the fourth edition, revised and expanded, of a work first issued privately in 1951, and published in its third edition in 1963. Without question, it is the most comprehensive single work in its field, ranging over the whole of the relevant English language material available-in public record offices, published form or in academic dissertations--and generally recognised as a standard work. Since 1963, the number of entries increased from 3,000 to over 5,000, clear evidence of a substantial and significant output in this area of research. Clear cross-referencing, through a classification system, and subject and author indexes make this a valuable research aid to maritime historians everywhere. Robert Greenhalgh Albion is Professor Emeritus of Oceanic History at Harvard University, and Director of the Munson Institute of Maritime History at Mystic Seaport, Connecticut. Between 1943 and 1950 he was part time Historian of Naval Administration for the US Navy Department, and has written numerous books and articles on maritime and naval history. .
