NY, London: Charles B. Norton. FAIR book cover (worn spine) around a tight VG text block.. 1853. 1st thus. Hardcover. FAIR book, MISSING top & bottom of cover's backstrip. VG text block. Top edges of most leaves unopened. 10"x6", 524pp. . Brown cloth boards, edge ruled & central floral design in blind. Front cover with gilt vignette of liberty cap holding the scales of justice. Spine lettered in gilt. Spine MISSING upper & lower 1/5th of the backstrip. Weak upper hinge. Otherwise nice text block; tightly bound, no loose pages, aging, soiling, foxing, etc. Poole was an important figure in 19th C library science. In 1848, while still a student, he compiled the first index of 154 pages. In 1882 the 3rd, @ 1469pages. The ngreatly expanded to 6 vols published between 1882 & 1908. Wikipedia: these latest six contained 482,000 articals on 378,000 subjects from 12,000 vols of 479 British and American periodicals. This 1853 must contain 3000 entries. Pencilled notation inside cover: "A Oakley Hall, who purchased at sale of W Burton Oct 1860". Hall, 1826-1898, was a lawyer, politician & writer. He was NYC mayor from 1869 to 1872. .
