A survey of deplorable conditions in segregated schools throughout the South at the turn of the 20th century; one of the first statistical refutations of the "separate but equal" fallacy. A key early Du Bois work, an expanded edition published ten years later as "The Common School and the Negro American." Octavo (22.5cm.); grey-green printed wrappers; [4],ii,[2],120pp. Wrappers toned and rather fragile from poor stock quality, small losses at spine ends, else Very Good, internally fine. Published as Atlanta University Publications No. 6.
