Volume 1: – [6], VII - XXVII, [4], 3 - 698, [2] pages, acknowledgements, foreword by author, introduction by Dorothy Norman, key to abbreviations in footnotes and map of India before Partition. Black and white photographic frontispiece showing a very young Nehru. Purple coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles back strip. Purple coloured tint to the top text edge. Photographic dustwrapper, same photograph as for frontispiece, with black and blue coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Volume 2: – map of India after Partition, appendix, glossary, bibliography and index. Black and white photographic frontispiece, showing Nehru as an older man. Purple coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Purple coloured tint to the top text edge. Photographic dustwrapper, same photograph as for frontispiece, with blue and black coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Title says it all. Volume 1: – rubbing and softening of the back strip edges and rubbing of the lower book edges and top book corners. Age toning of the text block edges and pages. The dustwrapper is somewhat creased and rubbed with a 1 inch tear to the top edge of the rear panel. Yellowing of the white coloured background. Black coloured marker to the lower right-hand corner of the front fold over panel. Volume 2: – softening and rubbing of the back strip edges with rubbing of the lower book edges and bumping of the top book corners. Age toning and a couple of marks to the text block edges with age toning of the pages. Minor creasing of the top dustwrapper edge with rubbing of the panels.
