About This Item
Frankfurt am Main: F. W. Delkeskamp, 1856. First revised edition of this fine bird's-eye view of this stretch of the Rhine River: relief shown pictorially. It measures 85 inches long by 10 inches wide and folds into boards measuring 10 x 7 1/2 inches (only one board still present). Includes Notes a Consulter pour le Nouveau Panorama du Rhin" by Frederick William Delkeskamp. This is a guide to sights along the river. Originally published in 1852 (prior to this new edition of the panoramic map). Our copy is the fourth edition dated 1856 and the text (24 pp.) is in French only. Some expected browning at fold line but altogether in quite good shape. An English (scientific) biography has just been published on the life and times of the artist Frederic William (Guillaume) Delkeskamp showing in great detail his groundbreaking bird's eye engraving maps of German rivers (Rhine from Switzerland to the Netherlands, Main, Moselle, Ahr), Switzerland with part of the French Alps (Montblanc, Annecy, Chambéry), Baden-Baden and Frankfurt. With his panoramas, Delkeskamp was the market leader in Germany and Europe between 1825 and 1870 and, at the same time, an early forerunner of Google Earth and Streetview. The foreign the tourists on the Rhine and in Switzerland - his customers - came largely from Great Britain, the U.S., France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
