About This Item
London: Alex Hogg, 1794. Hardcover. Good. Two volumes in one. Folio. pp. fp., tp., [3-5], 6-8, [9]-234; fp., tp., [iii]-iv, [5]-398; [399]-655, [1], lacking the subscribers leaves. With two folding maps and 173 plates, some misplaced according to the Directions at the back of the book. Good. Contemporary leather rebacked, titled "Portlock's Voyages" on the spine. New endpapers with reinforcements at the joints, some chipping to the new paper, foxing and a rectangular spot of oxidation to the original endpaper; some foxing throughout along with minor bumps and short tears to some pages but without any text missing; maps toned and with some tears and chips, damaged from improper folding. This combines Portlock's account of various voyages with a reprinting of the folio edition of Cook's voyages. Though some editions include Bruce's Abyssinia, Hodges's India, Patterson's Africa, Niebuhr's Egypt, Brissot de Warville's United States, Macartney's Voyages, and Portlock's Germany, this edition does not. Though, this copy still appears complete with the catchword on page 650 matching the first word on page 651.
