Very Good. xvi, 399, [1], 24 p.: 12 leaves of maps (most folded) and one large folded map of New England with an inset of the Boston area in the pocket in the back board; 17 cm. Includes two unpaginated pages of maps and in-text maps. Advertisements on endpapers. Publisher's orange pebble cloth with gilt-stamped spine and cover titles. All page edges speckled. Former owner's label on front fixed endpaper: F.F. Thompson, Sonnenberg, Canandaigua, N.Y. F.F. Thompson (Frederick Ferris Thompson, son of New York banker John Thompson) married Mary Lee Clark (daughter of Myron Holley Clark, governor of New York) in 1857. They built Sonnenberg as their summer home in Canadaigua in 1885. They were philanthropists, supporting many organizations, including Williams College, Vassar College, and Columbia University. In Very Good Condition: spine is sunned; covers are slightly rubbed and soiled; front joint just starting to fray at head of spine; endpapers are split at hinges; shadow on pp. 222-223, 242-243, and 296-297 (probably old bookmarks); otherwise clean and tight. A very nice copy of the first edition of this post-Civil War American travel guide with the separate map and an interesting provenance. Not an ex-library copy.

Krumbhaar (1882-1966) taught applied pathology at the University of Pennsylvania from 1927 to 1942, was a distinguished cardiac physician, and was one of the founders of the American Association of the History of Medicine. Former owner's name written along fore-edge of title page: L? Krumbhaar. A fascinating look at German-speaking parts of Europe at the beginning of industrialization. Very scarce. In Good Condition: lacking about half of the leather over the spine; boards are rubbed; pages are lightly brown but clean and tight.

At the time of publishing, there were about a half dozen resort hotels to which the affluent from New York and Philadelphia could retreat for the season.

Octavo, paper boards, 22 x 15 cm, [viii], 132 pages; backstrip chipped, paper toned and a little brittle, with torn title page and occasional chipping, decent condition overall. Half-tone photos throughout.A very evocative guide book to "Jewish excursions" in Frankfurt and Hessen, dedicated to "My wife, Bertha Lilienthal, née Fuchs. My hiking companion on rocky roads." The preface is dated almost exactly a year before Kristallnacht. The author was the chief cantor at the main synagogue in Wiesbaden. He and his wife fled to Amsterdam in June 1939. He was transported to Theresienstadt in 1943 and murdered in October 1944. His wife's exact fate is unknown.

Good copy of these early well illustrated topographical accounts forming volume 5 of Britton and Brayley's Beauties of England and Wales series.
