New York : D. Appleton And Company,, 1882. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Bookplate for: SAMUEL O SCHWEITZER. A collection of engravings from British Painters, in this work titled The New Gallery of British Art. Quarto, [two volumes]. Full leather, title in gilt on spine and cover of each volume, raised bands, embossed illustrations on covers. Touch of wear to covers, limited to bottom edge of spine. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Complete with 61 full page illustrations with tissue covers in Volume I and 60 in Volume II. All plates are clean. An exceptional collection of works from British Artists. This work was released in 1882 by subscription from D. Appleton and Company. It was completed by the publisher in 40 parts and sold for 50 cents each. Samuel O. Schweitzer, an artist and calligrapher who fashioned scrolls for American presidents and the Queen of England, among others, owned these books and designed his own bookplate. Schweitzer gained fame for the ornate scrolls and certificates he produced for dignitaries, entertainers, local organizations and friends. Pages gilt on three edges. Light brown Foxing throughout.
