Octavo (185 x 125 mm), original printed stiff wrappers, colour frontispiece plate with flags of Great Britain, Australia and Papua, pp [8], 173; extensively illustrated with line-drawn text figures and several photomechanical process plates (and a second colour plate), map; text in English; clean throughout; an exceptional copy, from The Papuan Collection of Charles Fletcher (Melbourne), his bookplate to the verso of the front free-endpaper. This is the second edition of this reader, whose content is identical to the first, issued in 1928. Its use was compulsory for children in the ""upper classes"" of the Papuan Assisted Primary Schools system. The topics covered are wide-ranging and include science; the animal kingdom; time, the calendar and the seasons; building construction; handicrafts; foods and natural produce; measurement, and commerce. Care is taken to ensure that all of the examples and illustrations are drawn from the typical Papuan student's own environment and life experience. Trove locates only two copies of the 1943 edition (Deakin University Library; University of Adelaide Library), and one of the 1928 edition (SLNSW).
