About This Item

London: Printed for the Publisher by T. Bensley, 1807. First edition. Two parts in one; without the third part comprising the Temple of Flora. Engraved titles and tables, allegorical frontispiece, portrait of Linnaeus, 25 engraved plates of botanists and 91 engraved botanical plates after Ehret, Edwards, Henderson, Miller, Reinagle and others. Without the portrait of Linnaeus in Lapland dress. Large folio (23 x 18 inches). Contemporary olive morocco elaborately panelled in gilt and blind, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Small area of loss to top of spine, worn at edges, front hinge starting. Some foxing. The scarce two first parts of the highly important work known as the Temple of Flora, without the the third part with its famous color plates. The bibliographical complexity of the work bears witness to the fact that "[n]o two copies of this book are alike" (Buchanan).

The present volume includes all of the portraits and plates listed by Dunthorne (including the often lacking plate of coffee), plus many additional anatomical and other plates not noted by Dunthorne. This example without the three plates relating to tea or the folding plates of Vesuvius noted by Dunthorne as occuring only in some copies. Dunthorne 303; Nissen 1955; Great Flower Books, p. 143
