About This Item
New York: Rudd and Carleton, 1859. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. xiv, 433 pp, illustrated. Three-quarter black leather over marbled boards. Leather well rubbed at extremities. Ownership stamp ("Benton House") on 4 pages, scattered foxing; otherwise unmarked, binding sound. The first 257 pages relate to California. Palmer, a doctor, arrived in San Francisco in 1849 and spent worked for a year as the city physician. Cowan (p. 471) says "his sketches are rather different from those of many of his fellow-sojourners." In 1851-52 he was a surgeon in the East India Company's navy and participated in the mutiny of 1857 (Smith, American Travellers Abroad, P11).
