SUBJECT(S) : Jews - United States - periodicals; Hebrew literature, modern - history and criticism - periodicals. Tchernowitz (1871-1948) was born in Russia and studied in Lithuania; he was ordained in Kovno in 1896, after which he moved to Odessa and started a yeshiva that later became a rabbinical seminary. He emigrated to New York in 1923, where he taught at the Jewish Institute of Religion. As a teacher, he desired to combine traditional Jewish education with modern research and teaching methods. "Masekhet Zikhronot (1945) is a collection of essays on Mendele Mokher Seforim, Ahad Ha-Am, Bialik, and other well-known personalities with whom he associated during the early stages of his career.
