About This Item

London: John Murray, Albemarle Street, 1840. Thick small octavo, liv, 571 pages. [10] leaves of plates. Later edition. Originally printed in late 1805 but dated forward to 1806. The book went through dozens of printings, and was one of the most profitable books published by Murray. The author originally intended the book for use by her daughters, and borrowed a good number of the recipes in the original edition from her ancestor, Mary Kettilby. This has been called the "earliest manual of household management with any pretensions to completeness, it called forth many imitations." (DNB). Small abrasions to edges of publisher's gilt and blind-stamped dark green cloth. [Not in Attar or Cagle].
