1865 EXQUISITE Bible Italian Renaissance Illustrated ART Raphael Titian RARE

This 1865 Bible features beautiful engravings of the artwork of high profile Italian Renaissance artists including Fra Angelico, Pietro Perugino, Lorenzo di Credi, Titian, Raphael, and Gaudenzio Ferrari.

Per Darlow & Moule,

"Edited by Thomas Longman. The initial letters and all the decorative portions were designed or drawn on wood by Henry Shaw, and the figure illustrations drawn and engraved under his supervision."

1686 GREEK & ROMAN Military Dutch Netherlands Wars Elephants Woodcuts Paffenrode

Jan van Paffenrode was a 17th-century Dutch soldier who was much better known for his poems and writings on military tactics than his military service. After the successes of his poems and his translation portions of Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', Paffenrode wrote a treatise on Greek and Roman military at the onset of the Franco-Dutch War in in the 1670s. This work, "Greek and Roman Military Trade" compared ancient classical battle tactics to modern Dutch techniques.

This 1686 edition includes numerous engravings depicting gear and weaponry used in ancient battles – footwear, helmets, scepters. However, the illustration of the War Elephant is easily the most interesting of all of the engravings found in this work!

David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.
According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. This edition also includes an expanded preface as well as folding maps and notes and illustrations on the Galapagos Islands.
