Content: Maine 's celebrated down east writer recalls the glory (and hell) of the days when a school outing was a class picnic by hay wagon on a brisk October evening especially the one when young Peggy Day stepped out of the wagon, not realizing it had stopped on a bridge, and plumeted into a frigid stream. By the time the boys arrived at the picnic ground, she was standing gleaming in the firelight, her clothes drying nearby. He remembers the evening he heard his first whippoorwill and the cry of the Maritime express roaring through the center of town at a reduced speed of eighty miles an hour. He recalls his firs hell ripper of a no'theaster a lulu of a storm that beat upon the window of his small room in Freeport, Maine.
