Synopsis
Carlos Mario Nieto Eire nació en 1950 en La Habana, Cuba, y abandonó su patria a los once años como uno de los 14.000 menores de edad que salieron sin acompañantes de Cuba por el puente aéreo que ahora se conoce como la Operación Pedro Pan. Luego de haber vivido en varias casas de acogida en los estados de Florida e Illinois, él y su hermano Tony fueron reunidos con su madre en Chicago en 1965. Su padre se quedó en Cuba y murió en 1976, separado de su familia. En 1979 el autor recibió su doctorado de la Universidad de Yale y comenzó su carrera de profesor, primero en la Universidad de Saint John’s de Minnesota por dos años y después en la Universidad de Virginia por quince. Durante ese tiempo también pasó un año en Madrid gracias a una beca Fulbright, y dos años en el Instituto de Estudios Superiores de la Universidad de Princeton. En 1996 regresó a la Universidad de Yale, donde actualmente ocupa la cátedra T. Lawrason Riggs de Historia y Religión. Reside en Guilford, Connecticut con su esposa Jane, sus dos hijos, John-Carlos y Bruno, y su hija Grace. Este es su primer libro sin notas a pie de página, y la edición en inglés fue galardonada con el Premio Nacional del Libro (National Book Award) para no ficción en 2003.
